Description

Balie's Gat offers a rugged and deeply restorative escape hidden within a remote valley of the southern Cederberg. This destination is ideal for those who truly want to leave the modern world behind and venture into a landscape defined by dramatic rock formations, ancient fynbos, and absolute silence. Getting here is part of the adventure, as the access roads require a high-clearance vehicle, and a 4x4 is essential for anyone towing an off-road caravan or trailer. Once you arrive, you are rewarded with a sense of complete isolation and peace of mind that only such a pristine mountain setting can provide.

The camping experience is divided into several unique areas, each offering a slightly different way to connect with the surroundings. Some sections provide the luxury of soft green grass and the cooling shade of blue-gum or ash trees, while others feature thatched gazebos that offer a structured break from the sun. Because the sites are tucked into various corners of the valley and mountainside, there is a strong emphasis on privacy and individual space. We absolutely loved our stay at Balie’s Gat Camping! What a special experience. The natural surroundings are truly beautiful – peaceful, unspoiled, and the perfect place to reconnect with nature. Waking up to fresh air, open skies, and the sounds of nature was exactly what we needed.

We really enjoyed the “back to basics” feel of the campsite – it gives you that authentic camping experience – but with the added luxury of having your own private ablution. That made such a difference and added so much comfort while still keeping the rustic charm.

It’s the perfect balance between simplicity and comfort. We left feeling refreshed, relaxed, and already planning our next visit. Highly recommend for anyone who loves nature and a bit of camping luxury!

What an absolute pleasure to have stayed at Ballies Gat. Yvonne and Marius are exceptional hosts, out of sight when you want peace and quiet, yet always available when you need anything. Always extremely friendly and accommodating. Whenever you speak to them, they will always ask if there is anything you need. The camp site is well looked after with lush grass, sufficient shade and the private ablutions are perfect. During our stay, the camp sites were fully booked, yet it took nothing away from the serenity. Our fellow campers were also wonderful which was a plus. The entry road definitely requires a vehicle with decent ground clearance (and 4x4 when towing), but that contributes to the overall positive experience. All round 5 stars.

The road leading to Balie's Gat creates a stunning entrance to this hidden treasure. Our camping experience was top notch! Great shade for camping, the bathrooms were tidy and well maintained. The days were sweltering in December, but the evenings brought a welcome drop in temperature. We will be back, thank you Yvonne and all the staff for making our stay possible.🏕️

What an amazing stay we had. Totally secluded and off the grid. Camp was fairly full but a please to stay there. Clean ablusions. Lush lawns. Plenty of shade at Rietdakkie campsite. Yvonne makes the most amazing seeded bread you have ever tasted and her salads are just as tasty. We will most certainly be back again. Cats moved in with us for the weekend.

Went camping with friends. Wonderfull camping spot for walking and birding and stargazing. Unfortunately they allow owners whose pets dont behave. So you might be bothered by barking dogs
