Balie's Gat offers a rugged and deeply restorative escape hidden within a remote valley of the southern Cederberg. This destination is ideal for those who truly want to leave the modern world behind and venture into a landscape defined by dramatic rock formations, ancient fynbos, and absolute silence. Getting here is part of the adventure, as the access roads require a high-clearance vehicle, and a 4x4 is essential for anyone towing an off-road caravan or trailer. Once you arrive, you are rewarded with a sense of complete isolation and peace of mind that only such a pristine mountain setting can provide.

The camping experience is divided into several unique areas, each offering a slightly different way to connect with the surroundings. Some sections provide the luxury of soft green grass and the cooling shade of blue-gum or ash trees, while others feature thatched gazebos that offer a structured break from the sun. Because the sites are tucked into various corners of the valley and mountainside, there is a strong emphasis on privacy and individual space. While the setup is purposefully rustic to keep the focus on nature, the facilities are thoughtfully designed. Campers have access to communal ablutions that are kept neat and functional, fitting perfectly with the off-grid ethos of the valley.

Lovely campsites at the bottom of a deep valley, the road down is magnificent descent. At the bottom of the hill are the shaded lawns with the spacious campsites. Four of us stayed at the Boesmansklip site, the lowest of the side by side sites. Though each site is demarcated and has its own ablutions, they are all adjacent, so you may have neighbours if the camp is busy.

The bathrooms and amenities were very clean, and we loved the option of both hot indoor and outdoor showers. Also appreciated the handy steel basin stand and drying rack for dishes. The hosts were friendly and delivered firewood and shared a bit of the farm and campsite history 😊

The river is a short walk away with good swimming spots. Highlight of the campsite might have to be the two friendly farm cats that spent some time hanging out with us, napping on laps and entertaining us with their antics.

Balie's Gat is the best camping spot in the area, very quiet and peaceful and just far enough out of town to have a completely immersed experience with nature, the sunrise and sunset over the beautiful mountains incredible.

The camps are well equipped with braai areas, ablution facilities, and tonnes of shady areas so great for adventure bikers riding through the area for an overnight rest stop. Marius and Yvonne are very welcoming and helpful hosts. We had a motorcycle break down 50km from the camp and Marius very kindly drove to assist us late at night. they also have Ice, food options you can pre order and very generous fire wood baskets.

We look forward to coming again!!

A perfect mountain getaway! Highly recommend to anyone looking to go on an adventure between the mountains and under the stars. We stayed in the secluded Oupa Carl tent - you are away from everyone and anything, listening only to the birds chirping, the river running, and the fire crackling. Peaceful perfection! No cell reception or WiFi also ensures a week/weekend of disconnection. Yvonne and her husband, the owners, are very kind and helpful!

We absolutely loved our stay at Balie’s Gat Camping! What a special experience. The natural surroundings are truly beautiful – peaceful, unspoiled, and the perfect place to reconnect with nature. Waking up to fresh air, open skies, and the sounds of nature was exactly what we needed.

We really enjoyed the “back to basics” feel of the campsite – it gives you that authentic camping experience – but with the added luxury of having your own private ablution. That made such a difference and added so much comfort while still keeping the rustic charm.

It’s the perfect balance between simplicity and comfort. We left feeling refreshed, relaxed, and already planning our next visit. Highly recommend for anyone who loves nature and a bit of camping luxury!
