Nuwerust Rest Camp

We stayed at Lemoenkloof self catering house at Nuwerust in April 2026. It is described as a 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom with a fireplace in the lounge. It fails to mention that the second bathroom is outside. There were no couches in the “lounge” and the fireplace was not practically accessible next to a huge and out of place dining table. The floral, faded, threadbare bedding was straight out of every motel horror movie ever made. The place overall gave off major ick vibes. The location is lovely but would give the accommodation a hard miss. There are much nicer places in the area.

If you are looking for comfort, fast Wi-Fi, and city-level convenience, this is probably not your place. But if you are searching for something real, raw, and deeply connected to nature — then this place is truly special.

Getting there is already part of the adventure. The road becomes rough, long stretches of gravel, dust rising behind your car, mountains slowly growing around you. It’s not the easiest drive, but that’s exactly what makes arrival feel earned. You don’t just “arrive” here — you disconnect from the world step by step.

The campsite itself is simple, authentic, and peaceful. No artificial luxury, no noise — just open space, mountains, fresh air, and the sound of nature. Each camping spot has its own braai area, which creates a very warm and social feeling in the evenings. Sitting by the fire under a sky full of stars is something you don’t get in modern life anymore.

Facilities are basic but functional. Showers with hot water are available, and the ablution blocks are generally clean and well-maintained considering how remote the place is. This is important to understand — this is not glamping. This is real camping. You should come prepared with everything you need, from food to small essentials. If you are ready for that, you will have no issues at all.

This is where the place truly shines. The Cederberg mountains are absolutely breathtaking — unique rock formations, wide valleys, and a feeling of untouched wilderness. The air feels different here. Cleaner, quieter, deeper. Whether you go hiking, exploring nearby trails, or just sit and enjoy the view — you feel grounded.

There are plenty of hiking opportunities nearby, including famous landmarks like Wolfberg Arch and Maltese Cross. Trails vary in difficulty, so both experienced hikers and casual walkers can find something suitable. Every path offers incredible views and moments where you just stop and take it all in.

There is little to no mobile signal, and at first this might feel uncomfortable. But after a few hours, you realize how valuable that silence is. No notifications, no stress — just you and the environment. It’s rare, and it’s powerful.

Quite pleasant but far out from the other resorts and the start of the hikes at Sanddrif. The campsite is very nice with plenty of shade and a splash pool. Next time I would ask for a site with grass & shade as a priority. Some sites are sandy which isn't great. I would also try to get closer to the hikes.

We received a warm welcome from Louise, who was very helpful throughout our stay. We stayed in Oom Willem Se Huis. The chalet was well equipped and conveniently close to activities in the area, which made our trip enjoyable.

That said, I would suggest requesting photos of the inside before booking, as we were a bit disappointed. The curtains were dirty, and overall the place could benefit from a more thorough deep clean.

Nonetheless, we did enjoy our stay and appreciated the location.
