In the heart of the Karoo, in the town renowned as the coldest place in South Africa, lies a destination where they don't farm sheep or crops, but something far more magical: they farm with stars. Welcome to Sterland Caravan Park, a place where camping under the night sky is not just an activity, but the main event. Located just one kilometer outside of Sutherland, this is the very spot where nightly stargazing sessions unfold, offering you a front-row seat to one of the most spectacular celestial shows on Earth.

The park is designed to be your comfortable base camp for this astronomical adventure. The spacious stands are all equipped with the essential comforts, including a reliable electricity point to run your heaters on a cold Karoo night, and a private braai area for that classic campfire experience. A well-maintained ablution block, with its two powerful electric geysers, ensures a wonderfully hot shower is always waiting for you after an evening spent under the stars. For social gatherings, two communal lapas provide a wonderful, sheltered space for campers to meet and share stories.

While the nights are for the stars, the days are for safe and relaxed family fun. A special enclosed area has been created where young kids can safely cycle and play under the watchful eye of their parents. For larger groups, a unique "Muisbos" enclosure, complete with its own central braai lapa, offers a fantastic, private gathering spot. Whether you arrive in a caravan, on a motorbike, or with a simple tent, Sterland offers you the unique and unforgettable opportunity to camp right at the heart of South Africa's stargazing capital.

This was one of the best experience ever! The space and place is so tranquil and peaceful. We did the glamping and oh my it was an amazing experience. We also loved the star gazing experience such a beautiful experience 😍

Sterland is as close to perfect a campsite that I have been in recently. Each stand is demarcated on 3 sides with mature trees for shade and privacy.
Water, power and braai facilities are all on hand. There is a lovely pool that is designed for lounging in.
Above all the ablutions are absolutely pristine. The Ladies facilities have fully separate actual bathrooms.
There are also many other venue facilities including the fascinating stargazing evenings hosted by Jurg. Super informative and pitched perfectly for everyone to enjoy.

Incredible stargazing experience! Our host Jurg was hilarious and super knowledgeable—cracking jokes about constellations while expertly explaining stars, planets, and galaxies.
Through his powerful telescopes, we clearly saw Sirius, Saturn’s rings, Orion's nebula, and lots of other stars . He kept everyone engaged and entertained. Highly recommended

ACCOMMODATION - we stayed in Skrywershuisie and I was most impressed by the thought that went into providing everything to make it cosy: heaters, electric blankets, hot water bottles, a GREAT fireplace, extra blankets - no need to be cold. It is a small, clean, comfortable cottage with great hot water, comfy beds and everything worked as expected.
FOSSIL TOUR - Jaco did a very interesting fossil presentation. What he lacks in formal status, he makes up for in his passion and years of experience working in the field with foremost paleontologists. He has found most of the fossils on display himself and had expensive models made at his own cost to help visitors understand the creatures he presents during his talk.
STARGAZING - Jurg guided us to rather do the Saturday tour than the Friday tour and weather conditions were indeed markedly better. I loved the video that helped provide context for how very insignificant (and therefore magical) we are in the universe, followed by a presentation of key constellations and markers that I will now be able to find again. The actual star gazing through the telescopes was a fresh new experience for me and it took me a couple tries to align my eye properly - so worth it! Jurg was great at handling a very large and diverse group and answered questions gladly.
OVERALL Sterland provided an excellent Sutherland experience for us, and a great base from which to enjoy other outings (Observatory, Mountain passes, Tankwa). The hosts pour their hearts and souls into what they offer!
