Description

At the very end of a winding country road, cradled 360 degrees by the majestic Cape Fold Mountains, you will find Simonskloof Mountain Retreat—a place where the rush of the modern world simply ceases to exist. The camping experience at Simonskloof is intentionally and beautifully off-grid. Forget power points and manicured lawns; this is a down-to-earth sanctuary for the true nature lover. The spacious, private campsites are thoughtfully spread out around the base of a magnificent, 300-year-old oak tree, the ancient, living heart of the retreat. Most sites offer a patch of grass, some welcome shade, and the incredible luxury of their own tap providing fresh, pure mountain spring water. The entire setup is designed to be unsuitable for standard caravans, preserving the intimate, rustic-tenting atmosphere.

Our stay at Simonskloof was beyond amazing. Remote, tranquil and a perfect escape from the rest of the world. The accommodation and property are both beautiful, with outstanding views and wonderful hiking opportunities. Jurgen is a super host and took great care to ensure our stay was unforgettable. A beautiful spot tucked away at the end of the road near Montagu. The journey there already sets the tone, but nothing quite prepares you for the spectacular views that open up when you arrive - wide, peaceful and absolutely breathtaking.

Being off-grid, Orange Cottage is thoughtfully setup, comfortable and perfectly in harmony with the surrounding landscape. It’s the kind of place where you immediately feel relaxed and connected to nature.

A special mention goes to Jurgen, who adds a personal and welcoming touch to the entire experience. His hospitality makes you feel right at home while still giving you space to enjoy the tranquility of the setting.

If you’re looking for a quiet escape with stunning scenery and warm, genuine hosting, this is the place is truly special.

I will be back with my fam.

Properly protected and respected land. Peaceful, tranquil, far away and over two mountain ranges from the city gives it a Bortle 2 class sky, excellent for star gazing (even without a scope). I encountered a porcupine late at night and a little DSH cat that shyly hung around in the bushes a little way off. Hidden, but accessible amenities: taps, toilets, showers. The other campers were very respectful, the shower was fantastic. Grass on most stands, many stands very far away from each other. Not many other campers at all when I was there, which was nice. You don't need a 4x4, and SUV/higher clearance would be good, but its very do-able in a normal sedan or hatch-back (though you'll probably have to leave the roadster at home).

We had an idyllic weekend camping at Simonskloof. The campsites are spacious and spread out under historic oak trees. There are wonderful hikes to be done and we cooled off in the dam. I would love to return, the spectacular scenery and the bird life was good for the soul.

Had an epic solo scramble along the Gecko Trail from Lipsieg up to Simonskloof. It’s no easy trail but that’s the fun in it. A beautiful gorge with many river crossings ending with a pretty shear 500m elevation scramble/climb.
