Melton Wold Guest Farm

A wonderful three days immersed in Karoo history

We spent three days camping at Melton Wold, and it was a memorable experience. This is a very special place — a historic, working Karoo farm with a wonderful sense of being both completely connected to its past and very much alive today.

Melton Wold has been welcoming guests since 1935 and is recognised as South Africa’s oldest guest farm. The main guesthouse dates back to 1889, giving the place a remarkable sense of history and character.

The campsite facilities are basic, but everything was spotlessly clean and perfectly suited to the setting. What really makes Melton Wold special, though, is the opportunity to explore the farm itself. We spent time wandering around, enjoying the landscape and spotting an impressive variety of birdlife and wildlife, including sable antelope and pale wildebeest. It is a wonderful reminder that this is not simply accommodation in the Karoo, but a living, working farm with a rich natural environment.

We also booked one night for dinner in the big old guesthouse. We were the only guests that evening, but the team still made a huge effort to make it a special occasion. There was something rather wonderful about having this grand old dining room almost to ourselves and experiencing the traditional hospitality of the farm.

We had some great, long chats with Willem and Ronelle. Willem’s hospitality became particularly memorable when he kindly came to our rescue and towed us out after we managed to get ourselves stuck in the mud — an occupational hazard of exploring a working Karoo farm!

Melton Wold is one of those places where you should slow down, explore, talk to the people and let the history and landscape sink in. It has a wonderfully authentic character that is increasingly difficult to find.

For anyone travelling through the Karoo, particularly those who enjoy history, wildlife, birding, camping and genuine farm hospitality, Melton Wold is well worth the visit.

It is a time capsule. It's very clean and tidy old worldy.
They do say things will be done which aren't. But it's such a lovely place that's ok.

Truly an amazing step back in time! It was a treat for the eye as much as for the soul. Beautiful architecture, old remnants of the past, lush gardens, endless views and friendly hosting. Ronel and Brenda made us feel at home and we enjoyed listening to the history of Melton Wold. We camped for two nights and were lucky enough to be the only campers and literally have the whole place to ourselves. The kids thoroughly enjoyed the daily visit from the owl which hopped around merrily on the lawns at night hunting. The drives were well marked and we enjoyed stunning views from start to finish. We enjoyed a dinner and a breakfast feast at the guesthouse, majority of the items were all from the farm and cooked to perfection. Our whole family left there with very special memories and can’t wait to visit again.

Returning to Melton Wold Guest Farm always feels like stepping back into treasured memories. From Dean’s childhood holidays, to visits with our own children over the years, this special place has been woven through so many chapters of our lives. This trip carried even deeper meaning — a time of reflection, healing, and remembering loved ones while surrounded by the peace and beauty of the Karoo. Some places become part of your family story forever, and Melton Wold will always be one of ours.
