Set on a gently rolling dune in the Kalahari, it’s an accessible and affordable destination where you can experience true peace and tranquillity. This is an exclusive-use campsite, meaning you will have the entire serene space to yourself, guaranteeing absolute privacy. You can pitch your tent in the soft Kalahari sand, under the welcome shade of mature Camel thorn and Shepherd trees. The camp is intentionally unfenced, allowing for an authentic, close-up experience with the surrounding nature and the free-roaming animals that might wander by. It’s a place for those who understand that the greatest luxury is not in fancy amenities, but in peace, space, and a genuine connection to the earth.

While the experience is rugged, your basic comforts are well catered for. The campsite has its own full ablution facility with a shower, and a classic boiler system provides reliable hot water. A practical kitchen area with a washing-up sink makes meal prep easy, and while there is no electricity, thoughtful solar lights are installed for essential evening light. Wood is provided for both the boiler and your braai, and a short walk from your camp leads to a beautiful panoramic view over the farm, a perfect spot for a sundowner.

A stunning oasis of silence in the Kalahari. No internet, no electricity (solar-power only), no people. Just a rustic, offgrid camp and a thatched chalet with 360 degree views of nature.
We camped at Bessiebos, and stayed in the Camelthorn chalet. Both provided a divine break from the modern world's madness.

Thota Lodge is quite a unique and special place. As a self-catering lodge, it offers everything you need to feel at home, topped off with an amazing view over the Kalahari. It’s a great place for anyone who loves being outdoors and enjoying nature, while still having the comfort of proper, African-style accommodation. The sunsets are stunning, and birdlife is definitely busy almost around the clock - perfect spot for birding activities. The fireplace is inviting for great braai nights under the African sky — which, by the way, is absolutely breathtaking out there.

I had the pleasure of staying at this charming little guest house tucked away in the heart of the Kalahari, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. From the moment I arrived, the staff made me feel genuinely welcome with their warm smiles and attentive hospitality. You can tell they care about every guest and go out of their way to ensure you’re comfortable.

The rooms are minimalistic in the best possible way — clean, thoughtfully designed, and equipped with everything you need. No unnecessary clutter, just a calming, functional space that lets the natural beauty outside take center stage.

And what a view it is! The scenery is absolutely magnificent — vast open landscapes, endless skies, and the kind of quiet that lets you hear your own thoughts. Being surrounded by nature in such a pure, unspoiled setting was deeply relaxing and soul-fulfilling. It’s the kind of place that reminds you to slow down, breathe, and just be present.

If you’re looking for a peaceful escape with heartfelt hospitality and the raw beauty of the Kalahari, this Lodge is a perfect choice.

Our experience at Thota Lodge was nothing less than exceptional, Amazing. Friendly staff and clean Rooms and the best of all is the small pool to cool down. The farm life is very special and the nature is truly mind blowing.
