Description

Kouga Wilderness offers a genuine escape on a working farm, deep within the rugged heart of the Kouga Mountains. This is a destination for the self-sufficient traveller, a place where adventure and tranquility go hand in hand. Located 28km from Joubertina, it provides two very distinct camping experiences tailored to different tastes.

The main camp is a comfortable and social basecamp, featuring eight spacious, grassy sites nestled under the shade of ancient oak trees next to a stream-fed pool. Each site has power and a fireplace, with the camp's social heart being a large communal lapa equipped with a fridge, freezer, and pool table.

For those seeking a truly wild and private experience, the Bush Camp is an unforgettable option. Tucked away in a forested gorge and booked for only one group at a time, this site offers ultimate seclusion. There is no electricity here, just a natural stone table, the shelter of a cliff overhang, and the sounds of a mountain stream. A short walk leads to a private flush toilet and gas-heated shower, perfectly blending raw nature with essential comfort.

The farm itself is a natural playground. Hiking trails wind through the mountains, 4x4 tracks challenge experienced drivers, and the Kouga River invites you for a swim in crystal-clear pools or to fish for black bass.

Absolutely loved our stay in the bush camp! Highlights were definitely the hikes, we did the 15k hike and the “waterfall hike” and they were absolutely stunning, challenging but well marked with spectacular Mountain views, exciting rock climbs, and cool mountain pools to swim in. Another highlight was the evening light show put on by fireflies, seeing beautiful birds during the day, and the five star ablutions in this remote camp site. The dogs loved it too, we will definitely be back!

This is a beautiful farm, off the beaten track. There’s no WiFi or mobile reception. It’s the perfect place for a digital detox. The hiking is endure endless and varied. The river swimming is lovely. I give the accommodation 3 stars only because it’s as described, comfortable and not luxurious. I would highly recommend it. There’s also a superb camp spot.

Absolutely stunning farm. We had a great time with our friends just relaxing and making a fire every night. The owners are friendly and helpful. Really stunning hikes and 4x4 trails. We will definitely be back. We did some abseiling and rock climbing as well. We would love to do more rock climbing with our next trip.

Utterly phenomenal Views, Peace and Quiet, the proprietors are wonderful people, Ablutions are Clean and fully functional (No Long-drops). And the Water is clean and Drinkable. 11/10 can recommend, and will go again.
