For those who long to get off the beaten track, Bessiebos campsite at Thota Lodge is a private and secluded gem. Set on a gently rolling dune in the Kalahari, it’s an accessible and affordable destination where you can experience true peace and tranquillity. It’s an invitation to sit by your campfire, listen to the unfiltered sounds of the night, and reflect on what life is truly about, far from the distractions of the modern world. This is an exclusive-use campsite, meaning you will have the entire serene space to yourself, guaranteeing absolute privacy. You can pitch your tent in the soft Kalahari sand, under the welcome shade of mature Camel thorn and Shepherd trees. The camp is intentionally unfenced, allowing for an authentic, close-up experience with the surrounding nature and the free-roaming animals that might wander by. It’s a place for those who understand that the greatest luxury is not in fancy amenities, but in peace, space, and a genuine connection to the earth. While the experience is rugged, your basic comforts are well catered for. The campsite has its own full ablution facility with a shower, and a classic boiler system provides reliable hot water. A practical kitchen area with a washing-up sink makes meal prep easy, and while there is no electricity, thoughtful solar lights are installed for essential evening light. Wood is provided for both the boiler and your braai, and a short walk from your camp leads to a beautiful panoramic view over the farm, a perfect spot for a sundowner.
Discover a true desert oasis where thoughtful design and a deep appreciation for comfort create an unforgettable outdoor experience. Nestled amongst iconic, shady Camelthorn trees, this is a destination that stands in beautiful, stark contrast to the rugged surrounding landscape. It’s a place designed for the self-reliant traveler who loves the wild but also values a touch of unexpected luxury. It offers a profound sense of peace, privacy, and exceptional quality in a spectacular natural setting. The camping experience here is in a class of its own, with each individual site designed to be a private, self-contained haven. Forget open-plan camping; here, each site is enclosed with its own wooden shelter, creating a wonderful sense of privacy and protection from the elements. This personal enclave is a hub of convenience, thoughtfully equipped with its own water tap, a braai pit, an electricity point, and even a wooden table and benches for comfortable dining. This commitment to comfort extends to the shared facilities. The ablutions are described as genuinely luxurious, with reliable hot showers and thoughtful "finer touches" like proper shower curtains and bathmats - small details that make a world of difference. The camp kitchen is also very well-equipped for all your needs. For the truly adventurous at heart, a separate, primitive campsite with no electricity is also available five kilometers away, offering a more rugged experience. With diesel available on-site, every need of the serious overlander has been considered.
